Circa 1905 – Barcelone

History of the house

Stay in the Barcelona of 1905, on the first floor of an evocative early 20th century building, furnished with period furniture and modernist works of art

Feel right at home in Circa 1905 BnB. This beautiful apartment offers a privileged historical location in the Eixample district of Barcelona, the traditional fief of the Catalan bourgeoisie, next to Paseo de Gracia, Barcelona’s main luxury shopping street. This spacious historic flat is just a stone’s throw away from Antoni Gaudi’s masterful creations, the Casa Mila and the Casa Batlló. La Sagrada Familia is within walking distance, as is the Plaza Catalunya and Las Ramblas, the heart of the old city.

A plush period apartment

Circa_1905_BnB_Stained_glass_windowCirca 1905 BnB is located on the main floor of an early 20th century building. Its decorative exterior, built along classical lines, is dotted here and there with much more free-flowing stylistic touches, inspired by the celebrated modernist movement (Art Nouveau) which flourished in Barcelona: stylised plant decor, idealised face motifs, tracery, textured glass, realistic, nature-inspired copper features, terrace designed with flowing lines …

The place has been carefully restored maintaining all the original period details: lightwells, coloured cement tiles, old window frames and louvered shutters, plaster decorations, marble chimneys and period furniture, while incorporating the latest standards of comfort, providing an evocative, exquisite and cosy atmosphere for its guests.

Experience the “Belle époque”

Study of Santiago Rusiñol

When you enter Circa 1905 you take a step back into the past. Precisely because the BnB’s owner, Mrs. Maria Paz Solar, an architect passionate about Modernism, made the decision to preserve its typical “Belle époque” atmosphere (see the works of Catalan painters Santiago Rusiñol or Ramon Casas). Located on the first (or “principal”), most luxurious floor of a 6-storey block of flats, it was originally reserved for the building’s owners and their family. The mosaic floors (as in A. Gaudi’s own bedroom in the Park Guell), stained glass windows, moulded ceilings (4 metres high) and sculpted balustrades … are original and exist harmoniously alongside the furniture, maps and modernist objects from the owner’s collection. Circa 1905 invites the visitor to Barcelona to continue dreaming of a bygone epoch after admiring the great works of Antoni Gaudi, Lluis Domenech i Montaner and Josep Puig i Cadafalch in the district of Eixample.

Circa_1905_BnB_Modernist_bustJust relax in the living room by the beautiful marble chimney, dip into the carefully chosen art books or ask the staff where you should go the following day to see the secrets of wonderful Barcelona for yourself. Then turn in and sleep in one of the nine rooms, each individually decorated with unique period furniture. Contemplating Gaudi’s Casa Mila from a Provenza room balcony or having breakfast surrounded by the fragrance of old magnolias on the terrace of a Mallorca room are experiences guaranteed to make your stay in the city of Barcelona unforgettable. Especially if you decide to sample the typical Catalonian tomato-bread (with garlic and olive oil) …

Circa_1905_BnB_sculpted_motifHave you noticed the very fine sculpted motif on one of the pieces of furniture of Circa 1905? It is undoubtedly one of the most original features in this apartment, but it is not so easy to find …

In the neighbourhood

Circa 1905 BnB, next to Paseo de Gracia, is the ideal place to plan a modernist tour of Barcelona. You can start by visiting Antoni Gaudi’s Casa Mila (“la Pedrera”), just 100 metres from the hotel, where you can enjoy a fantastic view of Barcelona from its enchanting roof. And then why not walk to the Casa Batllo, Casa Amatller and Casa Lleo Morera, called the “Apple of Discord” in the Paseo de Gracia, the finest examples of residential houses in Catalan Modernist style.

The Casa Batllo, by Antoni Gaudi

Continuing on to the Gothic Quarter, do not miss the Palau de la Musica Catalana, an architectural gem, and the Palau Guell, the palace that Gaudi designed for his patron, a wealthy industrialist of the time. You can round off this cultural tour with a visit to the Park Guell and the Sagrada Familia basilica, both masterpieces by A. Gaudi.

Circa_1905_BnB_lamp_footThe staff of Circa 1905 BnB will be more than happy to programme and advise on each of your visits, provide additional information in the form of books from its collection and suggest unusual activities, such as a visit to Catalonia’s Modernism Museum, an exclusive visit to a modernist house, or suggest a period style restaurant.

To read, watch or listen to

To_feed_the_imaginationTo fully appreciate the period atmosphere of Circa 1905, do not hesitate to enhance your stay by reading a few books (nothing beats a good historical novel to bring old stones back to life). Watching a film evoking the era or listening to some period music may also be a good way to transport you back in time… A few suggestions:

Books to be devoured in situ

  • « The City of Marvels », by Eduardo Mendoza
A whimsical portrayal of the city of Barcelona at the time of its two World Fairs. The hero of the story is Onofre, a racketeer of humble origins who becomes a man of wealth and influence, but is snubbed by those whose acquaintance he values most – the aristocracy.

Films to be watched before arriving

  • « Barcelona en Tranvia – 1908 », by Ricardo Baños
Ride through the streets of Barcelona, as if you were in a tram. The first views were filmed just around the corner from the Circa 1905 BnB.

Catalan traditional music to be enjoyed on location

L'endroit est magnifiquement situé dans Barcelone. L'aménagement est sobre et tout en finesse. Un accueil chaleureux et personnalisé. L'appartement est silencieux, malgré sa situation au centre ville. Je vous le recommande.
